I don’t go out to eat breakfast a lot these days. In fact, I don’t eat much of a breakfast at all. This of course, is a crime against humanity, and hundreds of small, decadent cafes that thrive off the “most important meal of the day”. So whenever I do make the effort of waking up early enough to warrant a breakfast that isn’t at lunchtime, I try to discover places that will tempt me out of bed again. Do I dare look a gift Snow Pony in the mouth?
Stepping inside Snow Pony, I was immediately transfixed by the massive poster hanging opposite the counter of a small boy ducking behind a table. Similar styles of artwork were displayed on either side of the walls and really enhanced the interior decor. A long wooden table split the room in the centre running from front to back. Along the sides of the restaurant sat small tables suitable for one or two people. The cafe radiated a trendy, cool ambiance with relaxed, laid back staff and a chilled out variety of background music. According to one of the staff, Snow Pony had been open for business for roughly two years.
As soon as we sat down we were greeted by a smiling waitress who quickly took our drink orders as she gave us the breakfast menu. With a caffè latte and cappuccino ordered, drinks were placed firmly out of our minds as our eyes wandered over the menu in front of us. It took until we received our coffee to finally choose something from the wide ranging menu. Talking about the coffee – it was superb! Just the right consistency of creamy milk coupled with a strong coffee texture made this one of the best cappuccinos I have ever had. The latte, while not as startling as mine, showcased what was obviously an above average barista at work. The cool patterns adorning the froth were a nice touch too.

With both of us settling for a variety of toasted open sandwich dishes, we eagerly awaited our meal. It arrived soon and we both set to devour our larger than usual breakfasts. The first thing I tasted was just the freshness of my fresh spinach and pepper salad. The spinach really tasted like spinach! The eggs were perfectly poached with the yokes oozing out all over the whole breakfast. The toasted grain bread had a slightly hard crust, but the inside was perfectly toasted and combined well with the rest of the meal. My friend chose the smashed avocado without the poached eggs, which was fortunate as they almost didn’t finish it. The avocado was just as fresh as my spinach, the toasted mushrooms were “very delicious” and the marinated feta balanced the dish splendidly. My friend emphatically stated that it was one of the best avocado sandwiches they had ever eaten.
What more can I say? Definitely recommended.
